Doll Collecting is Really A Grown-Up Hobby

Why do adults collect dolls?  We have read several articles on this very subject and agree with many points "Not Just for Little Girls:  Doll Collecting A Grown-Up Hobby" written by JoAnn Jacobsen-Wells several years back.

Listed below are her major points in the above-mentioned article sprinkled with some of our commentary:

1.  At first doll collecting was just a fad.  It has evolved into a love and the love turned into a true doll collector.  That would be defined as the person who buys a doll because she loves it, wants it, and enjoys it.
2.  Many doll collectors look at dolls as "works of art" only buying limited editions or OOAK (one of a kind) creations.  This can therefore lend itself to be an expensive hobby but the happiness doll collecting brings is much more satisfying than the money spent to buy the doll.
3.  "I appreciate my husband, as he doesn't understand my love of dolls, but he allows me to indulge. That is how his Dad was as well.  He understood it only because he knew that we loved it."
4.  Each collectible doll has some sort of sentimental value, and each represents a cherished moment.
5.  Each person who collects dolls does it for a personal reason.  For some it fills the void in their lives.  The dolls are comforting when the children and grandchildren are gone.  Some doll collectors remember the smell of a new doll at Christmas and want to recapture that smell because it triggers the memory of a good experience in the past.
6.  Others collect dolls because it just plain makes them happy.  Dolls don't talk back, they don't require changing diapers or food, and they definitely do not require anything but me looking at them and smiling.
7. Some doll collectors claim that doll collecting is less expensive than seeing a psychiatrist.  Some women have reported that doll collecting helps her deal with her depression.  Another woman has reported that collecting dolls fills the void that she feels when she thinks of her deceased son.

Whatever the reason collectors continue to add dolls to their collections, it is a wonderful and endearing hobby.

Top 10 Collectible Doll Brands - Would You Agree?

We thought it would be an interesting read to do a bit of research online on the latest information we could find on the "Top 10 Collectible (Manufactured) Doll Brands".  Unfortunately, the information we did find seemed somewhat outdated and we have shared our thoughts after each listing, if applicable.

We would love to hear your thoughts - do you think that any manufactured collectible dolls have been left off of the list that should be included, or are there any manufactured doll brands that you think should be eliminated from the list?

Top 10 Manufactured Collectible Dolls:

1.  Barbie Dolls (this brand of dolls always seems to rank high on the list and we have heard that Mattel has had a very successful year in Barbie Doll sales)
2.  Madame Alexander Dolls (at the top of our favorites list, and we truly believe Madame Alexander Dolls have staying power and are heirloom quality)
3.  American Girl Dolls
4.  Marie Osmond Dolls (many of Marie Osmond's Dolls from the past are incredible, but she has really not produced much in the way of porcelain collectible dolls, or any other type of dolls, for that matter, in 2012)
5.  Robert Tonner Dolls
6.  Adora Dolls (another favorite of ours) Incidentally, Adora Dolls are now distributed by Charisma Brands, who owns Marie Osmond Dolls.
7.  Bratz Dolls (would you really consider these dolls collectible dolls?)
8.  Lee Middleton Dolls (at one time, we would agree that they should be included in the top 10 list but Lee Middleton no longer produces collectible dolls per se.  The Madame Alexander Doll Company purchased the Lee Middleton Doll Company several years ago and they primarily produce only baby dolls geared towards children at this time)
9.  Ashton-Drake Dolls
10.  Ginny Doll by Vogue (these are adorable little 8 inch dolls similar to Madame Alexander Dolls but never have had quite the following that Madame Alexander Dolls have had in our opinion).

2012 Marks the 75th Anniversary of "Gone with the Wind" and "The Wizard of Oz"

Isn't it amazing that both movies, "Gone With the Wind" and "The Wizard of Oz" have had such lasting staying power over the years?  It is hard to believe that this year marks the 75th anniversary of both of these incredible movies.

To commemorate this event, there are several manufacturers who have either already introduced or will be introducing special dolls and bears to showcase both of these movies.  For example, Adora Dolls, Marie Osmond Dolls, Madame Alexander Dolls, and Steiff are some of those companies who have taken note of these anniversaries by producing special character dolls and bears from both of these movies.

Pictured above is Steiff's Dorothy The Wizard of Oz Bear EAN 681998 who came out last year.  We have gotten word from Steiff that this Fall they will be introducing a Toto dog complete in basket that looks just adorable.  This are already on order and we are looking forward to their arrival.

Marie Osmond Dolls 20th Anniversary Collection

Late yesterday we received in most of Marie Osmond Doll's 20th Anniversary Collection. This anniversary collection has Marie Osmond Doll collectors scrambling to obtain dolls from her current collection.

It is hard to believe that Marie Osmond has been producing collectibles for 20 years now. For those of you who were not able to catch Marie on QVC for her anniversary show, there definitely seems to be a renewed interest in her dolls.

Several of these dolls from this collection have already sold out but those that we received in yesterday were as follows:

Marie Sunshine and Happiness

My Perfect Pal

My Beary Special Friend

Adora Belle The Roaring 20's

Andelyn Wickedly Cute Tiny Tot

Baby Olive Marie Heirloom Tiny Tot

Friendship Rose Butterfly Whispers

Little Lovey's Closet

20th Anniversary Kissy My Heart

20th Anniversary Platinum Rose

Val

The two additional dolls that we expect to be receiving in mid-October (according to Charisma, distributor of Marie Osmond Dolls) are both Love Makes the World Go Round and Casperella, a Retailer Exclusive.

Marie Osmond Dolls October 2009 Collection

Marie Osmond Dolls October 2009 Collection has arrived. For those of you who watched Marie Osmond on QVC on October 26th, many incredible new dolls were debuted. We here at Beacons Glow Collectibles have received in at least one of each of these dolls that was presented during the show.

These include:

Rosemary Bru (Mary Benner)
Chloe (Sonja Bryer)
Baby Abigail Blessing Day (Sonja Bryer)
Harmony What Child is This? (Karen Scott)
Soyala (Karen Scott)

Mimi (JoAnn Pohlman)
Baby Tina (Karen Scott)
Adora All You Need is Love Belle (Marie Osmond)
Adora Belle Holiday 2009 (Marie Osmond)

Marie mentioned during the QVC show that the prices for these dolls is even more reasonable than usual. This is due to the fact that Charisma Brands is acquiring additional doll manufacturers and therefore, are getting better pricing on their doll production. Just recently, Charisma Brands (Marie Osmond is part owner by the way) has acquired Adora Dolls. We expect that these dolls will be offered to retailers in the beginning of 2010.

October Marie Osmond Dolls

We have heard from Charisma Brands, distributor of Marie Osmond Dolls, that Marie Osmond will be debuting her October 2009 Collection of dolls on QVC on October 26th. As always is the case, we plan on being sure to watch.

There are 4 dolls from this October Collection that we are sure will be popular with Marie Osmond Doll collectors.

They are:

1. Baby Tiny who comes dressed in layers of pastel pink tulle and crystal-embellished floral accents. She has been sculpted by Karen Scott for Marie Osmond Dolls.

2. Scarlet is dressed in a scarlet red dress with white faux pearls and coordinated hair bow. She truly looks like she could easily become a Christmas holiday doll to display during the holidays. Scarlet was sculpted by Kathy Smith.

3. Mimi, sculpted by the very popular JoAnn Pohlman, comes dressed in a black and white toile dress with bright red ruffled detailing. Incidentally, Mimi’s dress was inspired by Marie’s love of Paris and she is as petite and beautiful as her name.

4. Harmony - What Child is This is a musical doll costumed in a black embroidered chiffon with scalloped edging over a deep red and blue iridescent taffeta and coordinated headband. She plays "What Child is This" and was sculpted by Karen Scott. Harmony will be the third in the Harmony doll series. (She is pictured above).

As usual, we will match QVC pricing on all of these incredible Marie Osmond Dolls.

Marie Osmond Doll Adora Paper Roses Belle

We are excited to announce that we have received in stock Marie Osmond's exclusive "Adora Paper Roses Belle" and she is ready to order.

This beautiful 12-inch porcelain doll is sculpted by Marie Osmond for Marie Osmond Dolls. She has been created as a special keepsake for the Donny and Marie Show currently being held in Las Vegas at the Flamingo Hotel.

Adora Paper Roses Belle comes dressed in a costume that was inspired by the dress worn by Marie Osmond during the Donny and Marie Show when she performs her classic and timeless hit, 'Paper Roses'. Her dress is a floor-length black dress adorned with red embroidered roses and tiny rhinestones. The bodice of her dress is black crocheted lace.

This adorable porcelain collectible doll comes from a very limited edition of only 150 dolls. An excellent addition to any doll collection.

2009 Marie Osmond Dolls - 'You've Gotta Have Heart!'

Marie Osmond Doll's inspirational theme for her dolls in 2009 is "You've Gotta Have Heart!" Marie wants to stress to her collectors, as well as all women in general, the need to pay attention to both yourself and your heart. In the past, Marie has done extensive work in fund-raising for the American Heart Association.

Several of her dolls have this sweet reminder as this theme. Adora My Sweetheart Belle has a delicate heart pattern on the skirt of her pretty pink dress; Adora Heart Truth Belle is dressed in a dramatically vibrant red organza dress; and her adorable Darlene doll comes dressed in a red and white dress adorned with hearts.

Beacon's Glow Collectibles believes that this themed line will be as popular as Marie Osmond's "Becoming Butterflies" collection of dolls which stressed the magic of butterflies and what they represent.

Please remember that "You've Gotta Have Heart!" in both the way that you treat others, as well as yourself. . . .

Marie Osmond Too Sweets Tots Now Complete

Beacons Glow Collectibles received in the rest of Marie Osmond's Too Sweets Tots dolls and that completes the set. (Well, with the exception of the retailer exclusive but we still have not heard anything from Marie Osmond Dolls on that quite yet. . . )

The new Marie Osmond Too Sweets Tots that came in just the other day are:

1. Marshmallow Cream
2. Peanut Butter
3. Lemon Cream
4. Turtle
5. Swiss Chocolate
6. Raspberry Cream

QVC had previously advertised these dolls with a 2-tier white candy dish plate to sit the dolls on, but some of our customers have informed us that these plates are no longer in stock. Might we suggest a nice Lenox 2-Tier candy dish plate as a replacement? The dolls should look and fit quite nicely on this substitute.

Please stay tuned for that Marie Osmond Too Sweets Tot retailer exclusive. . . .

Marie Osmond Too Sweets Tots

This year marks the beginning of a wonderful new collection of dolls from Marie Osmond Dolls. The Too Sweets Tots Collection consists of twelve tiny 3-inch seated porcelain dolls each dressed and named for a type of chocolate. (For those of you that do not know, one of Marie Osmond's favorite foods is chocolate. . . )

Previously introduced on QVC, each Tiny Tot comes dressed in adorable little dresses and the detail on each porcelain doll is just incredible. A great way to display these adorably tiny dolls is to place them on a tiered candy dish. Wouldn't they look great in your kitchen or on your formal dining room table?

Here at Beacons Glow Collectibles, we have received in the following Too Sweet Tots from Marie Osmond Dolls:

Caramel
Dark Chocolate
Divinity
Mint Truffle
Orange Cream

Please stay tuned as we receive in more of these adorable Tiny Tots. We are still awaiting Lemon Cream, Swiss Chocolate Cream, Peanut Butter Cup, Raspberry Cream, Chocolate Marshmallow, Turtle, and a retailer exclusive that we have not seen yet.

Marie Osmond Olive May 50th Anniversary Doll

Beacon's Glow Collectibles is pleased to announce that late yesterday we received in "Olive May 50th Anniversary" from Marie Osmond Dolls.

She is absolutely exquisite and a perfect collectible must-have for any Osmond fan admirer. Olive May 50th Anniversary comes from the Toddler Collection and is from a limited edition of 5000 collectible dolls. She is a 12-inch seated porcelain doll.

Marie brought this wonderful Olive May sculpt out of retirement exclusively for this doll.

Please take a moment to read Marie's description from Olive May's "Certificate of Authenticity":

"It’s with great honor that Marie Osmond presents a very special tribute doll that was 50 years in the making! “Olive May 50th Anniversary” commemorates the incredible milestone of the Osmond Brother’s 50 years of entertaining. She’s “golden” through and through with gold-colored silk, lace and embroidery accents adorning her detail-enriched dress, including the names of each member of the famous Osmond family embroidered around the hem of “Olive May’s” skirt. Featured on her Certificate of Authenticity are the signatures of each of Olive & George’s nine children, which are Virl, Tom, Alan, Wayne, Merrill, Jay, Donny, Marie and Jimmy. For the Osmond family admirer, “Olive May 50th Anniversary” is a collectible must-have, to be cherished for 50 years (and more!) to come! "

Marie Osmond 100 Years of Kisses Has Arrived

We are excited to announce that we have received in a limited supply of Marie Osmond's "100 Years of (Hershey's) Kisses" dolls.

These adorable dolls commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Hershey's Kiss chocolate. When these irresistible chocolate candies were introduced back in 1907 each and every Hershey's Kiss was hand-wrapped.

100 Years of Kisses comes dressed in a chocolate brown satin dress with royal blue sleeve insets and netting. A silver and royal blue ribbon is tied around her waist, as well as her cute brunette pigtails. She holds a Hershey's Kiss in the palm of her hand and has that same cute look on her face as all of Marie's Hershey's Chocolate porcelain dolls. Incidentally, every Hershey's chocolate doll that Marie Osmond Dolls produces is sculpted by the very talented doll artist, Ping Lau.

We here at Beacon's Glow Collectibles are curious if Marie will introduce a 100 Years of Kisses Tiny Tot in the upcoming year.
